Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS) was established in 1964. Its main research field is focused at acoustics and acoustical signal processing, specializing in underwater acoustics in shallow sea, sonar technology, acoustical navigation, verbal and speech signal processing, non-linear acoustics, vibration and active noise control, piezoelectric acoustic transducers, acoustic micro-electric mechanical system, ultrasonic nondestructive testing, medical acoustics, acoustic communication, intellegent chips integration, digital multimedia and internet technology. IACAS won its high reputation with powerful research ability and great achievement domestically and internationally.
Many scientists of IACAS have made their great efforts in the innovative R&D programs such as "Key Technologies R&D program", "863 Project", "973 Project", the State Natural Science Foundation Program and the key programs of CAS. In 2001, the total research expenditure mounted to 138 million RMB. IACAS has made more than 400 research achievements since 1979, and won more than 190 awards at high level in China.
Research Groups
Now IACAS consists of 17 research labrotaries and 3 departments in Beijing, and 3 research stations in Shanghai, Qingdao and Hianan, respectively. There are 608 staff members and more than 300 postgraduate students in our institute. About 496 of the staff members are scientists including 6 academicians, more than 50 professors, and 110 vice professors. More than 22 professors are qualified to guide the doctorial postgraduates.
Research Facilities
IACAS is well equipped with modern facilities such as audio-frequency acoustics laboratory, high intensity sound laboratory, AMEMS laboratory, underwater measurement laboratory, ultrasonic testing laboratory, verbal acoustics laboratory and acoustic experimental ships with essential equipment.
Talents Cultivation
IACAS was authorized to grant doctor and master degree in acoustics and signal processing as early as in later 1970s. In recent years, the institute has highlighted the graduate cultivation and enlarged the recruitment scale. In 2001, the number of graduates in our institute totaled 203, including 102 masters and 80 doctors. In addition, there were 21 post doctors in the institute. The graduates have become an important science and technology power in the institute, which provides fresh blood for the research team constantly.
Development Strategy
Based on the fundamental researches, our mission is to be an outstanding national institute, which is powerful of constant innovation capacity and science and technology competition ability in acoustics and acoustic signal processing. We aim not only to put forward the basic, strategetic and far-sighted solutions to key problems in acoustics and signal processing for the development of state economy and security, but also to rank as one of the best institutes in acoustics domestically and internationally.
Education Policy
Rational management; strict assessment; high qualification; excellent education.
Purpose
To cultivate excellent postgraduate students; to produce first-class research power.
